Nine Inch Nails has been influencing musicians and earning accolades since mastermind Trent Reznor released industrial-rock debut album Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. Among the band’s many accomplishments since its inception are two Grammys, an Oscar, an Emmy (yes, NIN is shy just a Tony to achieve the coveted EGOT status), and three multiplatinum albums. The late legendary Johnny Cash also loved the band’s The Downward Spiral single “Hurt” so much that he covered it in 2002.

Now, three decades after NIN’s first release, the band is being recognized with an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2020 on Nov. 7 alongside Depeche Mode, The Notorious B.I.G., Whitney Houston, T. Rex, and The Doobie Brothers. In celebration of the honor, Billboard looks back at Reznor and co.’s achievements on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart.
