Monday (Aug. 31) settled a decades-long battle between R&B queens Brandy and Monica, who’ve been pitted against each other since their No. 1 duet “The Boy Is Mine,” the epic finale song choice of the evening.
And in its regular celebration of Black excellence in the music business, gospel singers Kirk Franklin and Fred Hammond lifted fans’ spirits following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent nationwide protests for a night of healing while piano maestros Alicia Keys and John Legend celebrated Juneteenth with their holiday face-off featuring their colorful instruments.
Rappers Snoop Dogg and DMX reached the highest level of “Verzuz” to date following the “battle of the dawgs,” which received 1.75 billion impressions across the internet while breaking Apple Music’s all-time livestream record. But neo-soul legends Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, who kicked off the first all-female battle back in May, pulled off their own impressive stats: Their collective streams tripled, from 2 million to 6 million streams, after the IG Live showdown.
